Functional Uses Of Baking Pans

by Chris Channing

When you are getting ready to bake something it is important that you know about the baking pans and baking dishes you can use. There might be more than you think you need to know about baking pans. Baking pans are available in different sizes and shapes and can be made out of different materials.

To figure out how much batter your baking pan will hold you will need to know the size of it. Using the wrong size baking pan to make something could cause you to make some mistakes in your baking. If you use a pan that is larger it will cause the depth of the batter to be shallower and the batter will bake at a quicker pace. Using smaller pan will cause the batter to be deeper and take longer to bake.

Baking pans come in different sizes also. Cake pans, loaf pans, and pie pans are the three most common baking pans. Cake pans can be either circular or square, however, there are two other types known as the angel food cake pan and the springform pan. Loaf pans are flat bottomed and generally very large. The pie pans are specifically designed for pies. Pie pans are circular, flat bottomed, and have flared up sides.

There are primarily two types of materials that baking pans are made from. Metal and glass are the two types, although glass normally refers to baking dishes. If you use a glass baking dish then you may have to reduce the temperature of your oven by twenty-five degrees. It’s common that recipes will inform you of which material your baking pan should be made of for that recipe.

You will probably want to know what the dimensions, volume, and the depth of your baking pan are. If you want to find out the dimensions of your pan then all you have to do is measure from one edge to another. It is important that you measure the inside of the edge though, if you measure outside then the thickness of your pan will be included in the measurement.

If you want to measure the depth of your pan then all you have to do is put a ruler straight up from the bottom to the top of the pan. Make sure you do not slant your ruler or else it will throw off your measurement. Lastly if you are figuring the volume of a pan then simply pour pre-measured water in cups into the pan until it is filled to the brim.

Whether you’re getting ready to buy a baking pan or use one to make a recipe, there are a few things you need to keep in mind. Generally most ovens cannot hold baking pans with dimensions larger than 17 x 14 inches. To prevent mistakes you should measure the dimensions, depth, and volume of the baking pan. When measuring the dimension of a pan it may help to know that 1 inch is equal to 1.54 cm and for the volume 1 cup is equal to 237 ml. Make sure that if a recipe calls for a certain type of baking pan that you use that type. Most recipes will tell you what type to use so you shouldn’t have anything to worry about as long as you follow directions.
