The island of Tenerife offers numerous advantages both for tourists and retirees, encouraging them to visit the island at absolutely any time of year. Among these advantages can be counted not only a year-round relaxing and enjoyable environment, but also the extraordinary hospitality of the locals. The subtle blend of customs and exotic traditions together with a natural beauty and unique landscape make Tenerife one of the most popular destinations for retirees from around the world who choose the island as their retirement place in the sun.

As to what the island provides that is so attractive and that makes it a perfect destination for retirees from around the world, this is undoubtedly its characteristic uniqueness and certain special attractions that this special travel destination exercises, so here let’s just take a look at some of the island’s features that together make it so popular.

But first a little background. The island of Tenerife is located in the Atlantic Ocean quite close to the coast of West Africa. It is the largest of the seven main Canary Islands, being a little over 2000 square kilometres in size. Although quite small in size, Tenerife possesses as many different types of climate as a whole continent. On Tenerife you will encounter many different types of farming, ranging from potatoes to oranges. And as to landscape this is really very diverse.

Tenerife possesses a rich and diverse variety of landscapes, foremost amongst which is the unique and unforgettable Mount Teide, an ancient volcano over 3700 m in height whose imposing presence is felt for miles around. Mount Teide IS Tenerife! It seems that almost everyone knows of Mount Teide, if not by name then at least to know it as a major symbol of the Canary Islands as a whole. It has been noticed and written about by explorers and adventurers from the time of Christopher Columbus onwards.

As an idyllic retirement destination, Tenerife has for centuries been famous for its wines, which have even been referred to by such notable writers from times past as in the diaries of Samuel Pepys and plays of William Shakespeare. Indeed, during recent times, wines from Tenerife have started once again to regain their popularity, with an ever increasing interest from enthusiasts around the world. But Tenerife is also loved for many other features, such as its popular golf course and huge selection of excellent restaurants.

Taking a look at the range of accommodation available on the island, it is immediately apparent that there is something available to suit all tastes and all budgets. Tourists have available to them hotels ranging from the most luxurious and pretentious to the more accessible and modest, dedicated to young people. So whatever your inclination or budget, Tenerife will provide a large choice of accommodation right across the island.

Entertainment and nightlife: Tenerife has it all! However no mention of the island would be complete without a review of the famous Carnival in Santa Cruz. Whilst balls and festivities have existed throughout the ages in this most festive of islands, the carnival ss it is known today is something of a recent event. And today’s full-blooded celebration of the Santa Cruz Carnival by both residents and tourists have produced a highly colourful spectacle surpassed only by the carnival in Rio.

Obviously in a modest article like this, one can do no more than briefly mention a few of the many reasons why people should choose Tenerife as their retirement destination of choice. However, even in the space of a short visit, a sufficiently impressive taste can be obtained, enough to convince so many that Tenerife should be given very serious consideration when selecting their perfect retirement destination. The wonderful climate, impressive landscape and great lifestyle offer huge possibilities seldom found elsewhere and combine to make Tenerife such an idyllic place to be added to anyone’s travel itinerary.
